The Photograph of Emilia von Klosterberg (The Clockwork Moth)

The candles burning in the candlesticks cast a flickering light on the Pre-Raphaelite countenance of Mrs. von Klosterberg and one could have had the impression that the dead lady was beginning to regain part of her erstwhile physical form. Depending on how the gentle rays of candlelight fell, Emilia’s features assumed either the delicate nature of those found in paintings of angels and saints or presented those of a nightmarishly hideous monster. The optical illusion caused by this play of light revealed the hidden nature of the deceased lady’s photograph, which under normal conditions could not be detected. Her eyes seemed to move, while the typical staid rigidity of people who posed for photographs was almost imperceptibly replaced by a disturbing, wildly outlandish facial expression.
